New VFW Post
Local veteran Al Yagovane knows firsthand that returning home from war can be a trying experience, which is why he wants to keep a Veterans of Foreign Wars post alive and well in Seymour.
The town’s former VFW Post 5078 disbanded last year, due to the few remaining members “getting up in years,” Yagovane said. Having a central location where fellow veterans can socialize, seek assistance about benefits and programs or just talk to someone “who’s been there,” is what Yagovane has been working on for the past year.
“We want to form a new post with new ideas,” Yagovane said.
Yagovane needs to recruit veterans, hailing from World War II, Korea, Vietnam, Cuba, Desert Shield/Desert Storm, Afghanistan or Iraq.
Yagovane served in the U.S. Army from 1990-91 during Desert Shield/Desert Storm.
Fellow veteran, Mike Caprio of Oxford, who served in the U.S. Air Force in Vietnam in 1967-68, is assisting Yagovane in his mission.
“You have to have something for the veterans, to work for their rights,” Caprio said.
Caprio and Yagovane concurred that soldiers more often than not have difficulty readjusting to civilian life upon their return from war.
“A lot of these guys have nowhere to go ... some become homeless and others turn to suicide,” Yagovane said. “We want to help these young guys coming back, and give them a place to turn for help.”
Yagovane recalls as an older solider in the Gulf War, he served as a “father figure” for the younger soldiers, and wants to be able to continue to offer that same type of companionship and service for fellow veterans.
Once a new post is up and running, Yagovane wants to hold fundraising activities for veterans in need; educate veterans about assistance programs, host job fairs (which Yagovane plans to do in April) and even sponsor a local baseball team.
There are currently more than 2.2 million members of VFWs in 8,100 posts worldwide, whose mission is to “honor the dead by helping the living.” The VFW traces it roots to 1899 when veterans of the Spanish-American War and the Philippine Insurrection founded local organizations to secure rights and benefits for their service.
